Filipino Kali

Kali also known as Eskrima or Arnis is a weapon based system which is ultimately an empty hand system. Single and double stick and stick and knife are taught. Others weapons are taught as the student progresses. Empty hand techniques are taught alongside Filipino locking and Wrestling (Dumog).

This art combines very effectively with filipino Boxing to make this a very well rounded martial art. With 70% of all attacks involving a weapon now couldn’t be a better time to study the Filipino Martial Arts.

Sigung Bruce Lee considered Filipino martial arts second only to his own martial art – Jeet Kune Do. A lot of JKD instructors and students consider the Filipino martial arts an invaluable part of their training.

Many films have recognised the effectiveness of filipino martial arts, notably “Taken” starring Liam Neeson and the “Bourne” series of films.

Silat is the generic term for the indigenous arts of Malaysia and Indonesia which can also be found in some parts of the Southern Philippines.

It is comprised of fast powerful strikes using kicks, knees, elbows and punches along with locking and throwing techniques.

Mick’s main style is Silat Lincah a Malaysian style known for its fast, hard locking and strikes. This was taught to him by Pak Guro Glen Lobo who also taught him Pukulan Madura a very hard striking system from the island of Madura, Indonesia.

Elements of Maphilindo Silat, which Mick learned from Sifu Larry Hartsell and Guro Dan Inosanto, are also added to the curriculum.

Mick was awarded Silat Instructor of the year in 2007.

Silat features heavily in the films “The Raid” and “Merantau”.

Sayoc Kali- All Blade All The Time

Sayoc is a Filipino knife defence system which teaches the student all aspects of blade awareness and defence. Empty hand and striking techniques are also taught in order to end a violent confrontation as quickly as possible.

The Sayoc Kali class also touches on security issues and self protection which has been gained from the Sayoc family’s extensive work in the security industry. Mick is one of only two instructors in the UK teaching this highly evolved Filipino system. He is overseen by European Director Guro Krishna Godhania and head of the Sayoc system Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc.

Sayoc Kali is famous for being featured in the 2003 American action thriller “The Hunted” which starred Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones. Two of Mick’s instructors, Tuhon Tom Kier and Tuhon Rafael Kayanan, were responsible for the choreography in this movie which showcases some of the most realistic knife fighting scenes to ever be shown in a movie. TV series, NCIS:Los Angeles has featured Sayoc numerous times.
